After reading â€Å"Country of the One Eye God† by Olive Senior, I couldn’t help but think that the story sounds all too familiar with the world in which we live today where money devours the souls of people with good intentions. This is a short story of a grandmother, Ma Bell, who has raised her grandchildren up from nothing. One grandchild in particular, Jacko, grows to become a rebel. Eloped with bitterness and resentment, Jacko gets what he wants by any means necessary, even if it means crossing those he loves. In this story, Olive senior takes us on a short journey with an uncut reality of a madness that goes on everyday. Olive Senior holds nothing back as he vividly depicts how poverty takes a toll on people which can result in devastation. My first and last impressions of Ma Bell were positive. To Ma Bell this dream, this vanity, represented a final checkpoint – ironically she looked forward to it. It is the one thing she put money aside for and it was so important to her that she always kept the money on her person. Her clothes had many layers and within these layers she kept her money stash. This dream gave her a reason to live and keep going because she knew once she couldn’t go anymore, she’d go out in style. Her very own flesh and blood, Jacko, takes this dream from Ma Bell. In a spree of murder, rape, robbery, and other illegal activity fuelled by bitterness and resentment, Jacko returns to the house where he was raised. At 19 years old, he is a wanted man. Jacko’s parents left him in Ma Bell’s care as a child so they can â€Å"go foreign† and seek a better life for their family. It was their intentions to come back for him once a better life was established, but unfortunately sometimes the best plans don’t work out for everybody. In this case, the plans did not work out in Jacko’s favor. They left him with his grandmother and false promises of returning for him each year. Nothing is more dangerous than a man with nothing to lose. A feared man on the streets, Jacko headlines the news and returns to Ma Bell for money to escape the country. His ego from all the people he has gotten over overspills into arenas he has no right venturing into. After a meal and some rum, Jacko demands Ma Bell hand over her savings. Ma Bell lives for a proper burial, and the only possible way of that happening is with her savings. In her mind, losing the money gives her no reason to live anymore; so she refuses. Jacko feels his family never gave him a fair share, so he decides he is going to leave with the money one way or the other. He pities Ma Bell’s relationship with God, calling him a â€Å"One Eye God† who only favors to the rich and forgets the poor. Ma Bell’s faith in God disgusts him, and angers him even more in his attempt to retrieve the money. The story ends with Jacko holding a gun pointed at Ma Bell, his very own grandmother. I think most people will think â€Å"no, he wouldn’t shoot his grandmother†. But I think most people watch too much TV. In reality, domestic violence runs rampant among many societies. Life isn’t a block buster movie where the FBI runs in and says â€Å"freeze! † In real life, the unexpected happens everyday, and in too many cases it is over money. A sorry story of a poor grandmother who came from nothing will not make that gun jam. Money has caused mass genocide and murder in poor places like Africa. Money has people of higher power manipulating people’s faith in religion, causing them to strap bombs to their body and detonate. Money has given birth to social status. Unfortunately, there are thousands of people just like Jacko around the world who are bitter about things in life that haven’t quite worked out in their favor, and will do anything to ease their suffering. In my opinion, Jacko isn’t the real bad guy in this story. Neither is Ma Bell or any of her other children. This story, â€Å"Country Of the One Eye God†, is a metaphor for the money infested society we live in where greed conquers all and all the wealth is divided amongst a handful of people. Heart Of Darkness And Kurtz Marlow's Journey into Kurtz? In Joseph Conrad's novel, Heart of Darkness, we are shown man insights into the darkness, that is the Congo. His characters Marlow and Kurtz undergo similar journeys through the evil and dark regions of their minds. However, Marlow is able to realize the darkness inside of him and retain his sanity before he reverts to a savage animal, like Kurtz. Marlow's disillusionment begins as early as when he comes onto the shores of Africa, what you expect is almost never what you get. Marlow travels into the Congo and not only meets Kurtz, but also becomes a reflection of him as he undergoes numerous changes in mind and body. As Marlow starts his journey on the Nellie, he realizes the change of atmosphere and the change inside the people. He sees the savages, the enemies or at least the people he had one time believed were the enemies right there standing before him and all around him. He later realizes that these people he had one time viewed as savage and unjust are merely"black shadows of disease and starvation"(24). Marlow sees the natives clinging to the shade as it seems safe and peaceful, but as he enters the shade he realizes it is "a gloomy circle of some inferno"(26). Marlow experiences how easy it is to be totally consumed by the true heart of this inferno, this darkness. The Inner Station is where Marlow finds Kurtz as well as himself. As Marlow meets Kurtz, he identifies with him and finds many of the same qualities in himself. He idolizes Kurtz, he sees a free and rebellious quality that he wishes he could possess. Marlow sees that Kurtz has embraced his savage side when he travels with the savages into the forest. Marlow tries to distance himself from Kurtz in his mind. He tries to make himself believe that he is not like Kurtz and he will not and can not do the things Kurtz does. When he follows Kurtz he stays at the edge of the woods, not venturing any further. This represents Marlow's unwillingness to participate in Kurtz's actions, realizing that the Congo reveals the evil and savagery in an individual. Marlow says:"I seemed to see Kurtz for the first time.....the lone white man turning his back suddenly on the headquarters, or relief, on the thoughts of home, and towards his empty and desolate station"(97)showing that Kurtz has turned away from everything that holds one together, humanity as well as society. Marlow does not like to lie, he has strong beliefs about lying yet he find ways to justify himself to tell them. He lies to The Intended so that the image of her dead fiance would not be destroyed. She has waited at least two years for her lover to return from Africa, and now he is dead. During this time she has built his image up in her mind she says, "it was impossible to know him and not to admire him"(119) which is blinding her from seeing the truth or believing it. To her Kurtz is a man to be admired. She feels it would be "impossible not to love him" (120). She was proud to have been engaged to Kurtz, and would be shocked to learn of the things he had done. Marlow had to decide if he should tell her the truth about Kurtz and cause her even greater grief, or let her go on believing that he was a good man. This is an extraordinary circumstance, and thus one in which Marlow felt he could justify himself to lie. The significance of this lie is that it would serve no purpose to tell the truth, so Marlow does not. Kurtz is dead and to tell the truth would only hurt an innocent woman. She had no idea that her fiance had an evil heart. She thought that he has loved and admired by everyone who knew him. If she learned of the things he had done, it would destroy her. Marlow showed his good side by not telling her the truth about Kurtz. This shows that even though Marlow has met a man with a Heart of Darkness, and that even after facing his own darkness, he has come out of the jungle unchanged, for the most part. In practice,  finite precision  is used and the result is an approximation of the true solution (assuming  stability). In contrast to direct methods,  iterative methods  are not expected to terminate in a number of steps. Starting from an initial guess, iterative methods form successive approximations that  converge  to the exact solution only in the limit. A  convergence test  is specified in order to decide when a sufficiently accurate solution has (hopefully) been found. Even using infinite precision arithmetic these methods would not reach the solution within a finite number of steps (in general). Examples include  Newtons method, the  bisection method, and  Jacobi iteration. In computational matrix algebra, iterative methods are generally needed for large problems. Iterative methods are more common than direct methods in numerical analysis. Some methods are direct in principle but are usually used as though they were not, e.g.  GMRES  and the  conjugate gradient method. For these methods the number of steps needed to obtain the exact solution is so large that an approximation is accepted in the same manner as for an iterative method. One of the simplest problems is the evaluation of a function at a given point. The most straightforward approach, of just plugging in the number in the formula is sometimes not very efficient. For polynomials, a better approach is using the  Horner scheme, since it reduces the necessary number of multiplications and additions. Generally, it is important to estimate and control  round-off errors  arising from the use of  floating point  arithmetic. Interpolation, extrapolation, and regression Interpolation  solves the following problem: given the value of some unknown function at a number of points, what value does that function have at some other point between the given points? Extrapolation  is very similar to interpolation, except that now we want to find the value of the unknown function at a point which is outside the given points. Regression  is also similar, but it takes into account that the data is imprecise. Given some points, and a measurement of the value of some function at these points (with an error), we want to determine the unknown function. The  least squares-method is one popular way to achieve this. Solving equations and systems of equations Another fundamental problem is computing the solution of some given equation. Two cases are commonly distinguished, depending on whether the equation is linear or not. For instance, the equation  2x  + 5 = 3  is linear while  22  + 5 = 3  is not. Much effort has been put in the development of methods for solving  systems of linear equations. Standard direct methods, i.e., methods that use some  matrix decomposition  are  Gaussian elimination,  LU decomposition,  Cholesky decomposition  for  symmetric  (or  hermitian) and  positive-definite matrix, and  QR decomposition  for non-square matrices.  Iterative methods  such as the  Jacobi method,  Gauss-Seidel method,  successive over-relaxation  and  conjugate gradient method  are usually preferred for large systems. Root-finding algorithms  are used to solve nonlinear equations (they are so named since a root of a function is an argument for which the function yields zero). This can be done by a  finite element method, a  finite differencemethod, or (particularly in engineering) a  finite volume method. Should Marijuana be legalized ? In all honesty, should it be? Ask yourself again. How is alcohol legal. Marijuana is much safer and has medicinal use capability . According to Cbsnews.com, in a recent poll in the New England Journal of Medicine, 76% of doctors approve Marijuana for medical use. 1446 doctors asked in 72 total countries. Why is marijuana so widely supported? Because it’s medical capabilities are legit. (I’ll address medical capabilities below) Alcohol totally impairs you and and causes your frontal lobes to malfunction. Its stupid, alcohol, which is actually dangerous is legal and people are still killing themselves under the influence, but Marijuana is good for you yet illegal? It seems as if the government is trying to kill us with such a thing being legal (I don’t drink or smoke so this isn’t biased) . Besides, who really cares? --> If â€Å"potheads† want to smoke, why not just let them smoke? Prisons are for criminals and not for people who smoke a plant that makes them happy. A significant aspect of this controversy is that freedom is being seized. In 2007, arrests for Marijuana alone totalled up to 775,138, dramatically surpassing arrests for all violent crime combined. That’s just ridiculous. People should not be getting incarcerated for smoking a plant that is beneficial to health. Most people just smoke it to reduce stress. Weed smokers are not criminals; rapists, killers, and thieves are criminals. Seriously people, prisons are being flooded. Sticking someone in prison isn’t something that’s cheap. According to Ministry of Justice, the cost of keeping someone in prison is roughly $25,000 a year. It benefits human health, it will boost the economy if taxed, it will massively reduce the profit of international crime gangs, it will bring down the ever so high crime rate, and will result in prisons not being packed with people who don’t belong there. Baumrind’s theory of parenting styles Introduction Diana Baumrind developed a very widely known theory of parenting which created a great impact on the idea of parenting styles that most parents adhere to and follow today. It is considered influential because it is perhaps the easiest to remember and where most parents or adults readily relate to in most cases (Morgan, 1977). Counseling then, wo uld serve as guidance to parents and would-be parents as to what would emerge as more successful parenting by introducing and comparing the different parenting styles.Despite the fact that what was employed was correlational type of research methodology does not mean that the results have become altogether invalid or insignificant. It means that for most of those who advocate the authoritative style, children have emerged as more adjusted and more capable of getting into different stresses that life in reality has to offer (Bootzin, 1991). Cyberbullying has become a recent problem among youths and their families. Children go online, and through social media are harassed, degraded, and ostracized, usually by their classmates. This is an epidemic that needs to be stopped, but demanding the schools to do the bidding of other, more qualified individuals is not the way to fix the situation. Cyberbullying is not the school’s issue to solely handle because it happens out of their jurisdiction, it causes further issues for both parties, and there are better solutions to this problem other than a school suspension. Schools should focus on what happens in the school and on school grounds, not about what happens when the student goes home. The only reason schools should do something about cyberbully is if it happens on one of their computers or over their Wi-Fi. Moreover, students mainly do the cyberbullying, while on their devices at home, on their own Wi-Fi.
